Expert Mechatronic Unit Replacements At Volks Autos
A mechatronic unit is an electromechanical component made up of a control unit, a pump, hydraulic valves, actuators, and oil. It operates the clutch and selects gears, such as in a DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox).
Should the mechatronic unit become faulty, Volks Autos not only have the necessary tools and equipment to replace the unit correctly, but as German car specialists, we also have experienced and trained technicians to ensure it is replaced accurately and efficiently. Our expertise in VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, and other German vehicles guarantees that your vehicle is in expert hands, receiving the highest level of care and precision.

Understanding Mechatronics Units
What is a Mechatronics unit?
A Mechatronics unit is part of the DSG automatic gearbox, found on VW Audi group vehicles.
What does it do and does my car have one?
The Mechatronics unit is responsible for selecting the gears and operating the clutches on the DSG gearboxes. The DSG gearbox, although thought of as an automatic transmission, is actually more like a manual gearbox in its operation. However, it uses two clutches (to achieve seamless gear changes) and in some versions, 7 gears. Put simply, the Mechatronics carries out all the jobs a driver would usually do in a manual vehicle.
If your vehicle is automatic and less than 15 years old, it is very likely that your car has a type of DSG gearbox with a mechatronics unit. If you are unsure, the Volks Autos service team would be happy to check for you.
How do I know if it has failed?
The symptoms of a failing or failed mechatronics unit can vary depending on the type of gearbox and type of failure. However, there are a few signs that there could be a fault. The most obvious sign could be a complete loss of drive or some gears not engaging. Less noticeable signs of a fault could include “jerky” gear changes or grinding sounds when changing gears. On some models you may even get a warning message on the instrument cluster or flashing gear indicator lights.
If any of the above were to be experienced, we would carry out diagnostic tests and checks to possibly confirm a fault with the mechatronics unit. At Volks Autos, we have extensive knowledge and experience with these gearboxes, allowing us to make accurate diagnosis of faults. There are other parts of the DSG gearboxes that are common to fail so it is important that we get it correct first time, to avoid unnecessary and costly replacement of parts.
Common failures & prevention tips
There are different common points of failure depending on type of DSG gearbox. The 6 speed wet clutch type can fail electronically due to contaminants in the gearbox oil. As this variant has a shared oil between the clutches and the mechatronics, it is vital that the manufacturer’s specified gearbox oil and filter change schedule is adhered to. This will help prevent faults.
The 7 speed dry clutch type has several known common faults. These are internal faults within the mechatronics in some cases causing the hydraulic system to over pressurise and leak externally.
