What Is A Cambelt?
A Cambelt or Timing Belt is the connection between the upper and lower halves of your engine. A Cambelt running on sprockets and pulleys turn a crankshaft in the lower half and a camshaft in the upper half. The Cambelt keeps the two halves of your engine moving in time together allowing your engine to run. A cambelt is normally found at the front of the engine which, in a transverse engine, is next to the offside inner wing then in an inline engine in front of the radiator fans. A Cambelt not only allows your engine to run smoothly, but to run altogether!
Does It Require Replacement & If So, When?
A cambelt change is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your vehicle. If neglected, there’s a risk it could break and cause major damage to your engine. Cambelts are designed to last a long time, but as a rubber component, they deteriorate with use and age. A cambelt is a perishable part that needs to be replaced periodically. Most manufacturers suggest a time and mileage change, depending on which comes first, while others may recommend time-only or mileage-only changes. There’s significant variation between manufacturers when it comes to when your cambelt change is due, ranging from 40,000 to 100,000 miles and from four to ten years.
If you’re unsure when your cambelt replacement is due, please contact our service team, who can advise you according to your manufacturer’s recommendations.
What Is Replaced During A Cambelt Replacement With Volks Autos?
We follow closely manufacturer’s recommendations. In addition to a cambelt replacement, we will replace all tensioners, idler rollers and associated parts, as these are just as prone to wear or failure as the Cambelt itself. On most late Volkswagen vehicles, the cambelt also drives the water pump, which can also fail. Therefore, where applicable, all our quotes include a replacement water pump, new antifreeze, idle rollers, tensioners, cambelt, and labour.
If your vehicle’s water pump is not driven by a cambelt, or situated near the cambelt where there could be a saving in labour, we will not usually advise the water pump to be replaced in that situation.
Polly V Belt Inspection And Replacement
The Polly V Belt (also known as a drive belt) runs several auxiliary components such as an alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and in some cases the water pump or even a super charger. In most cases this drive belt is removed prior to replacing the cambelt. Our technician will inspect the drive belt for wear or damage, and will recommend replacement if it is necessary–at no additional labour to help avoid future repairs and costs.
